It's a very big, very well trained, sector defense fleet. Having said all that while there's no cannon on the general makeup of those battlefleets, you can draw inspiration in your battlegroup formations from where they are and what they fight.īattlefleet Gothic is.actually not very special. That would get you the most generic Imperial battlegroup possible, regardless of fleet. Everything else is niche.) At least one ship should be a carrier, but not more than 50% of your line hulls. (Swords are the Lunar of escorts the standard, mainstay, mass-produced workhorse of the navy. If you wanted to make the most bog-standard possible Imperial fleet, it would look something like this: 2 Lunar class cruisers, 1 other LC-C, a Mars- or Overlord-class BC (Armageddons aren't super popular), and an Emperor or a Retribution, with 3-9 frigates, ~50% of which should be Swords. For every 3 ships of LC-GC weight, you could include 1 battleship. For every 2 cruisers or light cruisers, you could add one battlecruiser, heavy cruiser, or grand cruiser. In order to keep people from spamming certain things, and to better represent the way the Navy assembles its ships, there were restrictions on what you could field.Īny fleet could contain as many escorts, light cruisers, or cruisers as the commander desired, as long as it was within the points limit of the fleet. (Example: in the Gothic War, Lord Admiral Ravensburg rarely took the field, but when he did, it was almost always in the Emperor-class Divine Right.)Īs others have pointed out, there's very limited information on what any particular fleet has on its roster, however I can provide some tips in regards to general battlegroup composition, drawn from the old Battlefleet Gothic tabletop core rulebook. They're the flagships of the BIG admirals, the ones who usually work desk jobs and deal with Sector+ level strategy. Centerpieces of fleets, usually kept docked at major installations like Port Maw or Cypra Mundi or Mars unless required for major battles they're too big and slow to run all over the place with a battlegroup. They're big, they're chonky, they're incredibly powerful. They're called battleships, but they fill the role of dreadnoughts in most other sci-fi universes. Unlike the game, most 'pirates' the Imperium fights are not toting around military hardware an LC is enough to make them run for cover, and fast enough to catch them.īattleships are a red herring, name wise. Light cruisers are intended for convoy escort/scouting/pirate hunting, not major fleet engagements. All three are usually accompanied by several cruisers or light cruisers to frontline for them in battlegroups. The Armageddon is just a Lunar with more range and some extra lances. The Overlord is an up-gunned Tyrant that many view as a miniature Retribution. The Mars is an even better rear-line support specialist than the Dictator. Most of the BC's are just up-gunned versions of cruisers. Dictators are support ships designed to rear-line behind ships like the Lunar. Gothics are supposed to be capitol ship killers (which does not come across at all in the game, they suck ass), Tyrants are hardcore brawlers, Dominators are even better brawlers than Tyrants with incredible alpha strike but are rare and expensive. They're cheap, they're powerful, and they can be built fucking anywhere with enough time and access to resources.Įvery other ship in the Navy is some sort of specialist. Something like 50% of non-escort hulls in the Navy are Lunar-class cruisers. The workhorse of the Imperial Navy is the Lunar-class cruiser. These factors combine to create a well-armed, durable, and versatile vessel capable of holding its own in fleet engagements or blasting ground targets from low orbit, a ship worthy of carrying the Emperor's finest into battle.Lunars. Their crews are composed mostly of Servitors, but each ship does carry a compliment of Space Marines for repelling boarding actions and are designed to be easily defended. In addition, they are heavily armored and shielded with a powerful turret array, and are nearly as fast as most Imperial Navy cruisers. These vessels are configured more for planetary assaults than ship-to-ship engagements, with large Thunderhawk transport bays, heavy ground bombardment cannons, prow torpedoes, and a heavy broadside armament. These ships are very expensive to build and maintain most Chapters control only two or three. The Battle Barge is the battleship of the Adeptus Astartes fleets, a ship slightly smaller than most Imperial Navy battleships but more heavily armored and no less durable.
